Offshore Cruising Performance Sails

Precision engineered. Uncompromisingly light.

For the sailor who refuses to accept that offshore means heavy. Offshore performance sails are built for those who push harder, sail faster, and demand more from every square metre of canvas. Where offshore cruising delivers endurance, offshore performance delivers endurance and a competitive edge — because out there, the two are not mutually exclusive.

At 30 Knots, the offshore performance range represents the pinnacle of what SudWest Sails designer Ramses Landman builds. These are not catalogue sails. Every offshore performance sail is a bespoke engineering project, developed in close consultation with the owner, the yacht, and the intended sailing programme.

Triradial Construction: CDX Pro or DCX Sailcloth

The foundation of every offshore performance sail is a triradial panel layout. Where crosscut construction distributes load across the cloth bias, triradial aligns every panel precisely along the primary load paths — from clew to head, from tack to leech. The result is a sail that holds its designed shape deeper into the wind range, depowers more predictably, and loses less performance as the miles accumulate.

Paired with CDX Pro or DCX sailcloth, this construction delivers the strength-to-weight ratio demanded by serious offshore programmes: maximum tear resistance, minimal stretch, and a weight penalty that remains negligible even in heavier specifications.

Membrane Sails
The Ultimate in Performance and Longevity

For sailors where only the best will do, 30 Knots offers a full range of custom membrane sails. Unlike woven fabrics, membrane construction bonds the load-bearing fibres directly into a laminated structure, eliminating bias stretch at the source and delivering unmatched shape stability over thousands of miles.

Membrane specification options:

  • Custom membrane — fully tailored fibre layout and laminate specification to your yacht and programme
  • Taffeta outside — durable woven taffeta outer skin for added abrasion resistance
  • Light skin outside — reduced weight outer skin for racing-oriented builds
  • Heavy taffeta — maximum protection for demanding offshore conditions
  • UHMPE skin — ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene outer layer for exceptional durability and low weight

Personal Guidance from Ramses Landman

Every membrane sail purchase is accompanied by an in-depth consultation with Ramses Landman. Together you will determine the exact specification that matches your yacht, your sailing area, and your ambitions, ensuring that the sail you receive is precisely the sail you need, not a compromise.

The offshore performance category is built for demanding offshore sailors who value durability, optimised weight, and a sail design that leaves nothing on the table.

Configure your offshore performance sail below. 30 Knots sails will be in touch to discuss your specification in detail.

Sailcloth Selection

CDX Pro & DCX — Performance Laminates

Two world-class laminate options for offshore cruising performance sails. Both engineered for shape retention, UV resistance, and long-term durability in demanding conditions.

CDX Pro · Contender Sailcloth
DCX Line · Dimension-Polyant

CDX Pro Polyester Cruising Laminates

CDX Pro laminates are engineered for durability and cruising performance. The range is built around a series of sub-assemblies using different weights of taffetas and a 500 denier polyester cross-ply, combined with a 6000 dpi polyester insertion — creating a range of styles stepping up in weight and strength.

TiO2 in the adhesive adds UV resistance, and a robust anti-mildew additive provides advanced protection against mildew. Available in Natural White and Cool Grey. Designed for radial cut sails from 24 to 48 feet.

DCX Line · Dimension-Polyant

The DCX Line is Dimension-Polyant's answer for ambitious cruising sailors who want low stretch without compromising handleability. A mesh embedded in two films with a special taffeta on both ends delivers excellent warp stretch resistance and high tear strength.

The UVM® Finish coating adds UV protection and mildew resistance. The DCX upgrade over the DC mother line introduces a 9° X-PLY® for significantly increased support for diagonal forces — a meaningful improvement for offshore sailing in variable conditions. Climate neutral certified by CleanTEC.

Key properties: Improved elongation resistance · Excellent diagonal stability · Highly resistant surfaces · UV stabilisation · Mildew protection
